Portland's summertime festival season kicked off over the weekend under summer-like weather, a rarity for an event typically characterized by a jovial atmosphere and rainfall.
Not this year. For the first time in recent memory, the 29th Annual Cinco De Mayo Fiesta took place over three straight days of sunshine.
"It's been incredible," said Stephanie Lamberson, president of the Portland Guadalajara Sister City Association, which hosts the festival. "We haven't had weather like this in years."
Attendees at the annual event -- which marks the beginning of several months of festivals at Waterfront Park -- are used to preparing for wet and cold.

Festival organizers expected 75,000 people to attend this year's festival, far surpassing last year's count of 50,000. By noon Sunday, the midway swarmed with families biting into juicy watermelons and slurping ice melt from snow cones. Organizers' predictions looked promising.

The favorable weather enlivened to an event already lauded as the state's foremost cultural festival.
Typically, brightly-dressed Ballet Folklorico dancers and mariachi bands entertained the brave souls who endured the rain to celebrate Mexican heritage. This year, the main pavilion was packed for another reason: It offered uninterrupted shade from the sun's rays. The only umbrellas, for a change, served as makeshift parasols.
As Mexican artisans hawked beaded jewelry and carnies lured passers-by set aside their chiccarones and try their luck at tossing balls into the mouths of mechanical fish, the sounds of a traditional Andean pan flute wafted through the atmosphere.

"But even when I'm busy, I find time to walk around and take it all in," she said.
