Northern Vance High sent another 227 graduates on their way Saturday morning in a dignified ceremony led by first-year principal Michael Applewhite. Graduates were challenged to reach for their full potential, reminded of those who have helped get them through 12 years of school and basked in the delight of the occasion.
Applewhite told a full gymnasium the Vikings’ Class of 2013 had earned more than “half-a-million dollars” in scholarship opportunities.
“As freshmen, we dreamed of this moment,” said Ethan Byrom, the class valedictorian. “Today, our Class of 2013 takes the first step of who we will be in life.”

Happy and excited faces were the norm.
Byrom said the challenge given to him by a high school coach, David Hicks, was one he would extend to fellow classmates.

Byrom said the world is awaiting those willing to rise up and effect change within it. He said the school had helped shape his view of the world, but not his definition. He extended appreciation to administrators, teachers and family.

“Parents know us better than we know ourselves,” Abbott said, drawing a few quiet “Amens” from the crowd.
Tanaua White, the class president, noted how the group began as children and were now young adults. She described a mountain top feeling, and Northern Vance having provided a foundation.
“This establishes the end of our journey together,” White said. “I’m sure you will all move on to bigger and better things.”
