A routine visit to the doctor for a pair of orthotics led Ellen Wright to launch a program to provide prosthetic and orthotic devices for young people.
Mrs. Wright, 73 years old, a New Yorker, artist, cookbook author and interior designer, who is a member of the board of trustees for New York's Hospital for Special Surgery.
On a visit to the Hospital for Special surgery for her foot orthotics, she overheard a conversation in the waiting room regarding a teenage patient who couldn't get new custom-made shoes because his insurance wouldn't cover them. The young man had gone through a growth spurt, needed new shoes and couldn't get them because his plan only covered new shoes every six months.

So, when she joined the board, Mrs. Wright decided to focus her energy on the area of prosthetics.
