CCTV cameras could be installed at taxi ranks and designated spots across Mount Isa's CBD sooner than expected after a surge of funding from government.
Mount Isa mayor Tony McGrady said on Friday $160,000 had been confirmed from Federal Government Minister for Home Affairs and Justice Jason Clare under the Safer Suburbs Program - Taxi Security Scheme.

Cr McGrady said he was unsure of the projected timeline for the initiative, as he was still waiting on another funding application to be returned to make up the deficit.

Mount Isa Police Senior Sergeant Col Henderson said the installation of the 14 cameras across the CBD would allow for more efficient policing.
"I think it enhances our policing abilities, it can give us video evidence of these crimes that are occurring," he said.
"I have seen it work in the South East region in the Logan District and it has enhanced their abilities quite significantly."
