Wine, Women & Shoes is back, following its succesful event last year that raised more than $80,000 to help victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

“Our ultimate goal is a life free of domestic violence,” said Katie Somple, NEWS board member and event committee chair.

Money raised helps the organization provide life-saving and life-changing services, including a safe haven for women and children,Instead, businesses can offer thicker plastic bags or handled paper bags. “NEWS will be there every step of the way, whether it’s legal, medical, psychological or financial assistance,” said Somple.

A trend the organization has noticed is an earlier recognition of domestic violence, which can even show up in the romantic relationships of teenagers, Somple said, adding, “We will use funds raised at the event to support not only our extensive domestic and sexual assault support services but also to expand our services to children who have witnessed domestic abuse at home and help teenagers understand what a healthy relationship looks like.”

NEWS is able to stretch its donation dollars, Somple said, allowing 85 percent of every dollar raised to go directly to client services “and that’s a lot for a nonprofit. It’s the result of NEWS’ staff efficiency and the tremendous amount of stewardship that NEWS is known and recognized for.”

Somple is proud of the Upvalley’s support of the fundraising event and encourages local women and men to attend. “The awareness Upvalley toward the importance of this organization grew tremendously in the past year. Our supporters know the importance of helping domestic violence victims and because the problem is so common, it is important to step up.”

Wine Women & Shoes is the brainchild of Elaine Honig, who, while chatting with a girlfriend about the growing popularity of wine and food pairing events, is said to have joked, “Wine and shoe pairings would be a lot more fun.”

Wine Women & Shoes events take place in 50 cities across the country, with more than 25,000 people attending each year. The event has raised more than $15 million for women’s and children’s causes. This year, more than half of St. helena’s Main Street businesses have donated items or services for WWS, Somple said. Among men showing their support is Congressmen Mike Thompson, who attended last year’s event.

Although the reason for the event is serious, the event itself is lighthearted. It will feature something to eat, something to drink, something to watch and something to shop. “We’ll have more than 40 restaurants and wineries pouring wines and providing small bites at the event,” she said. “We’ll have Kara’s cupcakes for dessert as well as other sweet surprises.”

This year’s theme is “Wow Them in White.” There will be clothing for men and women, accessories, jewelry and shoes for sale at the event’s marketplace. Guests are encouraged to dress in white and plan to accessorize their outfits at the event.

There will be both a silent and live auction with St. Helena Police Chief Jackie Rubin once again pouring her “Code 3” wine and guiding the live auction.

Vintner Jean Charles Boisset will judge the attendees’ shoes as he walks around the marketplace, and determine winners in three categories: best heels, best wedges and best flats/sandals.

Another competition includes one of the event’s main attractions: The shoe guys, local men recruited Kelly Crane and who can be “adopted” for the day. “Everybody comes for the shoe guys,” said Somple. “They are high profile men in the Napa community who are handsome, funny and flirtatious and it’s all in good fun. They will pamper our guests at the event.”

Local women will model the fashions and all guests will receive swag bags filled with make up,Hi-Efficiency Filter Bags is supplied by manufacturer. beverages, snacks and other treats.qdgoutdoor, whose headquarter is situated in Hong Kong, is targeted at nothing else but outdoor footwear. Our group also owns a corporate office in Guangzhou, China. The event includes a raffle — 200 keys will be sold at $50 each — for a dream closet of items worth more than $8,000.

But most importantly, Somple said, those attending will learn about the road to hope from a guest speaker, a woman who is a former client of NEWS. She worked coincidentally at last year’s WWS event and after a tears-filled meeting with Tracy Lamb, NEWS executive director last year, she will share her personal journey toward an abuse-free life at this year’s event.

“Taking these victims, women and children, and bringing them into a place of safety and hope is what it’s all about,” Somple said.

Tickets to Wine, Women & Shoes are $175, general admission, or $250 for VIP tickets that include table seating and an upgraded swag bag.
