Earlier this month, Malea Guiriba from the charitable group Pie in the Sky loaded a vehicle with all the donations, so they can be distributed to those in need.
The shoe drive was the result of a challenge issued to students at St. Johns River State College. The students, in the bachelor’s program class of Jorge Herrera, were challenged to create a charity event that would make an impact in the community, explains, Gini Solano, credit support specialist at the Bank of St. Augustine, and a students in the SJR State College class.
“Even though our class ended in June, we have still been working with one another in order to collect all of the shoes and give them to Pie in the Sky,” she said.
“Because of the outpouring support shown by the community,” she said. “We are going to strive to make this an annual event.”
The plan, she said, is to contact local charitable organizations to find what needs the children have, and then base the drives on those needs. The needs include shoes, food, school supplies and clothes.
The group created the market strategy, community plans, contact pages and mission statements.
Many of those who donated, Solano said, “reached out to us to thank us for putting something like this together. Some people do not have the means to donate monetary funds, so it was great to find a way that allows others to donate regardless of monetary needs.”
