With a lot schools beginning in August, it’s time to take steps to getting one’s child or children ready for the upcoming school year.
Cherokee Immersion Charter School counselor Toni Workman said one important thing for parents to remember is make sure each child’s immunizations are current.
Health websites suggest parents take their children for physicals and eye exams prior to school starting. This is also a good time to ensure the child is current on his or her immunizations. Schools may require immunization records. If so, find out what the child’s school requires and have it ready ahead of time.
Workman also suggests parents take a tour of the school to allow the student(s) to feel more at ease.
“You will also get to see the layout where your child will be spending their time and meeting new friends. You can find out information as far as bus routes, lunches and pick up zones. This also makes the transition on the first day go a lot smoother,” Workman said. “Be positive. If you, the parent, are positive about your child’s education your child will be too and that is half the battle.”
Locust Grove High School Principal Lori Helton said it’s also important to ensure all records are up to date including addresses and phone numbers.

Helton also said school attendance is important in making a student’s academic career successful.
