“This provides an opportunity for individual students to have their own device to be able to access the Internet and to be able to participate in classroom activities rather than having to wait on a computer,” Pam Nail, associate superintendent for student achievement and leadership, said.

Nail said the iPads would likely be housed in the library, with individual teachers checking the devices out to use in classrooms as needed.

Another item addressed at the meeting was the school calendar proposal for the next three school years. Superintendent Dr. Gordon Pritz presented the results of polling of parents and teachers on their preferences for fall and winter breaks and when the school year begins and ends.

The biggest consensus among parents and teachers was for a full-week break at Thanksgiving and another full-week for Spring Break.

Pritz presented three options based on the polls and feedback from parents and staff. The first option has a full-week break in the fall and winter similar to the current school year schedule that requires an early start date and an end date after Memorial Day. The second option has a later start date and an end date before Memorial Day but replaces the full-week breaks in the fall and winter with single-day breaks on Columbus Day and Presidents’ Day. The third option is a compromise between the two with three-day fall and winter breaks and an end date before Memorial Day.

The three options will be posted on the DCSS website where parents and teachers can vote. Also at the meeting, Douglas County High School teacher Corinne Barnes was recognized. Barnes was recently featured as a “Class Act Teacher” on an Atlanta TV station. Barnes is in her 40th year of teaching and was “instrumental in getting the International Baccalaureate program started at Douglas County High School,” according to Pritz.
