The small portable building behind Marysville United Methodist Church houses an astonishing variety of clothes, shoes, pajamas and more, just waiting to be taken home by local school kids and their families.
Kloz 4 Kidz, a mission of the Marysville United Methodist Women group, is celebrating five years of operation this month with a “birthday” campaign to collect new socks and underwear from congregation members and the community.
The nonprofit organization, which is directed by a nine-member board, opened its doors Aug. 18, 2008. Since that time, the group has provided free clothing, shoes and more to 2,663 children.

Kloz 4 Kidz recognizes that children outgrow clothing quickly, so families can return three times each year to replenish wardrobes.
Volunteers for Kloz 4 Kidz accept appointments for three families each day they’re open, which adds up to about 80 children served per month. Slots for August, September and October are already filled, but there are a few openings available in November and December.

The clothing items are used but in like-new condition, explained Brittingham.
“Thanks to our volunteers, everything is laundered and mended if necessary,” she said. “We have about 30 volunteers who help staff the shop, plus others who donate the laundry and seamstress services.”

Some of the items also come from local schools’ lost-and-found lockers at the end of a school year.
“We often find donations at our door,” said Brittingham. “If there are items we can’t use for our clients—like baby clothes—we pass those on to the Salvation Army or Domestic Violence Services.”
Kloz 4 Kidz also gets occasional clothing donations from retailers including Costco. A grant from the Marysville Noon Rotary pays for new shoes, and other cash donations help cover the $1,200 monthly operating budget and purchases of new underwear and socks.
Another valuable donation is a free storage unit for off-season clothing, courtesy of Clock Tower Storage in Marysville.
“The kids are so thrilled to pick out their own new clothes,” said Johnson, a retired nurse.
She related the story of one 6-year-old client who was adamant about keeping the box that his new shoes came in.
“He was horrified when I asked him if he wanted me to throw away the box,” said Johnson. “That was the first pair of new shoes he’d ever had. The box was like a trophy for him.”
The need for volunteers is ongoing, said Brittingham, and the organization would especially be grateful for bilingual helpers who speak Spanish or Russian.
“We’ve had families come in whose parents couldn’t speak any English, and we had to communicate through ‘sign language’,” said Brittingham. “We made it work, but being able to speak with those families would really be helpful.”
The organization could also use help from volunteers to build and maintain a computer database, and to help with fundraising and grant writing.
