Just before he died, he was getting ready to make a batch of Grandpa Mel's Famous Pickles. "He was all excited," his son said. 

He'd gotten a recipe for kosher dills years ago and became known for turning out crocks of them at his Fox Point home. "He'd have an assembly line. We'd make pickles in the basement," his son said. 

He loved spending time on his boat, "The Sunny Side," while in Florida. "He liked to dance, he loved being out. He wasn't a reader," his son said with a laugh. "He was always busy." 

David Branovan said he learned this lesson about the business of life from his father: "Just enjoy it."
