A CAMPAIGN to rid Stroud of plastic and carrier bags has been launched by town councillors. 

The Stroud Town Opposed to Plastic (STOP) initiative, spearheaded by Coun Eva Ward, will be launched with a free screening of a critically-acclaimed film. 

Ms Ward described the movie Trashed, about how plastics and rubbish affect the planet, as a wake-up call. 

"I was so devastated to see the permanent impact on the food chain and environment through pollution of our air, land and sea by waste," she said. 

STOP plans to encourage businesses to support the campaign and hopes to challenge supermarkets to lead the way in encouraging people not to use plastic bags.
