The first time Katie Read’s parents asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up, she boldly and confidently told them she wanted to be an artist.
She was a little girl then, but today, she has made her dream into a reality with Katie Read Design, a handbag business she started in 2009.Today the number of Suit Bag Suppliers has increase rapidly.
Read graduated from Granville High School before going on to study residential interior design and fashion merchandising at Ohio State University. She earned her degree in 2005 and returned home to intern with a local interior designer.
She then took what she called a leap of faith and applied to be a technical designer with Abercrombie & Fitch. During her year with the company, she learned how to make clothing. She studied different seams, fabrics and patterns and created instructions for replicating the designs.
Although being a technical designer wasn’t her dream job, Read picked up the skills and the confidence she needed to say, “I can do this on my own,” and launch her business.

So she got to work. Read launched her shop on Etsy.com, an online marketplace for crafters. All of the bags in her shop — which offers everything from tote bags to clutches and diaper bags — are made by hand on the sewing machine in Read’s home studio.
Read is constantly on the hunt to find the perfect patterns that express her inner energy and artistic sensibilities. If a customer isn’t in love with any of the patterns featured in her shop, she works with them to find a custom pattern that fits their style.
She has only one rule when it comes to the patterns she chooses: They must be colorful and bold.
“My bags are bright. I don’t go subtle. If you want something subtle, I’m probably not your girl,” Read said with a laugh. “I like putting colors and patterns together to make something that’s almost unexpected.”

The flexibility that comes with running one’s own business is a perk Read absolutely loves. Following a monotonous routine every day does little to help the creative process. Plus, with a new baby at home, she needs all the flexibility she can get.
